ABOUT OUR WINNER
Meet Pete, the owner of Birria Pete’s — a small business built on passion, flavor, and consistency. What sets Birria Pete’s apart isn’t just the tacos (though they’re unforgettable), it’s Pete’s commitment to giving every customer the same quality experience, every single time.
Before starting his business, Pete worked at In-N-Out Burger, where he learned a simple but powerful idea: “Every burger must smile.” That message stuck with him. Today, he applies it to his tacos, believing that every taco should bring joy — through flavor, care, and heart.
For Pete, this business isn’t just about food. It’s about supporting his family, showing up for his community, and turning a dream into something real.
WHAT INSPIRED HIM
Pete officially launched Birria Pete’s in December 2019 — but the hustle started long before that. He spent months doing pop-up trial runs in his backyard, experimenting with birria recipes, setup layouts, and finding out what made a taco truly unforgettable.
His first event didn’t go as planned. He arrived late, made only $50, and left feeling defeated after watching another vendor thrive. But a tough conversation with his brother lit a fire inside him:
“I’m proud that you tried, but I’m disappointed because I know you could have done better.”
That moment changed everything. Pete signed up for the next event and promised himself he’d do better — even if it was just a little. He started seeing returning customers, got his first catering inquiry, and made a commitment that defines his business today:
“Every time I show up, something has to be better.”
That mindset became his mission. That mission became Birria Pete’s.
GRANT IMPACT
Thanks to the 909 Market Foundation Grant, Pete is making important upgrades that will elevate the Birria Pete’s experience for every customer who walks up to his stand.
With the $500 grant, he’s:
Updating his menu to a cleaner, easier-to-read design
Replacing the worn mesh walls on his canopy setup
Renewing a key vendor permit so he can keep showing up at markets
These might sound like small changes — but for a small business owner, they make a big difference. Every improvement means more professionalism, more trust, and a better experience for the community he serves.
